This presentation by musician ra / sol takes a deep dive into the history of dance music, going all the way back to and touching on the blues, the first underground clubs, house music, hip-hop culture and turntablism, Soundsystem culture in Jamaica, and how these roots of DJing and dancefloor culture have led to the big commercial rave events happening today. As rave culture continues to grow both commercially and in the underground, this talk will highlight the importance of remembering the political nature of these originating cultures, meant to create space for those ostracized from regular commercial spheres, and of staying connected to these roots and paying the respect due to Black music. The event will end with an audience Q&A, and will be followed by a dance party.
