Sled Island film is back for its 8th year and we’ve built our program around all of your favourite things: record shops, synthesizers, punk singers and teenagers! We’ve included some of the best animated and comedic shorts we’ve seen in ages (keep an eye out for Ben and The Break), documentaries, premieres and an awesome Q+A with guest curator Kathleen Hanna on Friday night! When programming, we were careful to start our screenings between 6:30 - 7pm nightly, to give you guys time to line up for comedy and music! If you’re partied out by Sunday, join us at the Globe Cinema for an afternoon of music videos and a fantastic/ surreal/ eccentric film treat from the 1950s. For trailers and more details, visit the film page.
Events are all-ages unless otherwise noted. Admission is included with the Festival Discovery and Discovery Plus passes. Individual tickets will be available at the door.
Sled Island Announces Comedy Program!
Sled Island is proud to announce the 2014 edition of its fan favourite and hot ticket comedy program, which is sure to be a bigger favourite and hotter ticket than ever!
This year, we're welcoming the voice of Comedy Central, Kyle Kinane, the mastermind behind both the Kroll Show and the world's greatest ever Red Hot Chili Peppers-based hoax, Jon Daly, plus Hari Kondabolu, writer for Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell, who was hand-picked by Sled Island Guest Curator Kathleen Hanna. But that's not all! Also joining the line up we have the star of Rollertown and the annual "Pats 24 Hours" comedy marathon, Pat Thornton, Laugh Sabbath stalwart, Kathleen Phillips, and introducing hometown weirdo and Comedy Network contest winner, Amanda Brooke Perrin!
To top it off, thanks to our generous partner One Yellow Rabbit we have the pleasure to add the beautiful Big Secret Theatre to our comedy venues. The Big Secret Theatre will also host two presentations of Radioheaded 2: A Listening Party to Watch during the festival, a creation of Denise Clarke mixing dance, theatre and music, based on 2007 Radiohead album In Rainbows.
More comedy details including additional acts, ticketing info and schedule to follow over in the coming weeks!
Lukes Pre-Fest Party Returns!
Sled Island is excited to partner with Lukes Drug Mart to host our second annual pre-festival party on Sunday, June 8th from noon to 5pm. The event will feature a free concert and is open to all ages. It will be taking place outside of Lukes Drug Mart’s Bridgeland location at 112 4TH St. NE.
Canadian hip-hop extraordinaire Shad will headline the party along with northwest pop-punk sensations, Tacocat as direct support. Vancouver’s Dead Soft and local Calgary band Night Committee will round out the bill.
This is our second annual event in partnership with Lukes Drug Mart, one year removed from the highly successful 2013 inaugural Sled Island pre-festival party which featured Rural Alberta Advantage and Ladyhawk as performers. As mentioned, once again it's free and all-ages. Join us for an awesome afternoon of total fun. RSVP for the Facebook event here.
We Support the Cycle Track Network
Sled Island supports the creation of a Cycle Track Network based on the positive impact it would have on our festival-goer's experience and the boost to our city. Read what executive director, Maud Salvi has to say about it below.
On April 28 Calgary City Council will vote on a plan for a separated Cycle Track Network in Calgary. This project will put more people on bicycles, reduce the amount of cars on our roads and benefit the health and safety of Calgarians. The vote at City Council is going to be very close. Tell your Council representatives that you support the Cycle Track Network by calling 403-268-2430. More information about the Cycle Track Network can be found here.
If you support the Cycle Track Network please consider ‘liking’ their Facebook page.
